Cru, a companion app for Rove

A tablet app for players of the board game Rove that replaces the physical damage tokens: every monster with its artwork, health bar and the right hit points for the number of players.

Cru on a tablet: a fight with monster cards, health bars and a round counter

The brief

In Rove you track monster damage with tokens on numbered boards, and keep flipping through the monster book to see which monster is which. Hit points also depend on the number of players, with formulas per scenario.

Cru (Cute Rove Utility) takes that over: pick a fight and the number of players, and the app sets up every monster with its artwork and the right numbers, so players focus on the game instead of the bookkeeping.

What I built

01

The whole campaign

46 ready-made fights from the prologue, the nine quests and four side adventures; monster counts and hit points are worked out for 2, 3 or 4 players.

02

Smooth play

Health bars that change colour, + and − or tap to edit, long-press to defeat, a round counter, calling in reinforcements and a one-step undo.

03

The story included

Each fight comes with its story text from the book, with optional voiced narration.

04

Custom fights

Search all monsters and put together your own fight with your own counts and hit points.

05

Made for the table

Six colour themes, haptic feedback, the screen stays on, and you pick up where you left off, even after closing the app.
